Paroles de Yesterday

Yesterday, I took the long way home
Yesterday, I wanted to surprise you
So, I stopped by the market and picked up some flowers
I'll ask for no reward – a simple smile will do
I got home and saw all of the lights on
How was I to pull off this surprise?
The front door creaked open, and I saw you had cooked something to give the dog something else to place on his mind
I walked up the stairs and heard the TV on
Nothing in our room seemed out of line
But, I saw the bathroom light on and opened the door
Damn you, girl – I saw that your surprise had beat mine

All I could do was stare ‘cause I was so unprepared

To see you alone like that
To know that you'd given up our hopes
It's worse than any heartbreak, worse than any dream
It's the worst to know you needed something, but decided to give up on me

Angling the steel was pretty hard
But, nothing was as hard as losing you
So, I led death to my hands and he emptied my veins
If you were off to Hell, then of course I was too

I'd sworn to God that I would never leave you or want to see you alone like that
To know that you'd given up our hopes
I finally caught you and we floated up, and I felt how your soul was bruised
Lost in the flames, I heard your voice, “I... thank you.”
